REAL ID name change after marriage
This is the part most people are scared of, so handle it carefully. REAL ID enforcement has been live since May 7, 2025, so to board a domestic flight you need a REAL ID-compliant license or an acceptable alternative like a U.S. passport. Your REAL ID has to show your full legal name, and you have to show name traceability: an unbroken link from your source documents to your new married name, usually a certified marriage certificate. Update Social Security first so your name lines up before you apply.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) / Transportation Security Administration (TSA); U.S. Department of State (passports)
How to update your REAL ID after marriage
Change your name with the Social Security Administration FIRST, then update your driver's license/ID and passport so the new legal name is consistent across documents.
DHS requires REAL ID applications to show your Full Legal Name and to demonstrate 'name traceability' — a connection between the name on your source document and the name you want on the issued card. Updating SSA first makes your records consistent before you apply for a REAL ID or new passport. (Note: the specific SSA-first sequencing is best practice for consistency; the cited DHS source establishes the full-legal-name and traceability requirements.)
SourceApply for a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or ID at your state DMV with documents proving your current legal name.
At a minimum DHS requires documentation showing: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence; and 5) Lawful Status. States may impose additional requirements — check your state DMV website before going in person.
SourceIf your current legal name differs from the name on your lawful-status/source document, provide name-traceability documentation.
DHS: 'The applicant should demonstrate name traceability, i.e., a connection between the name presented on the source document and the name requested to be on the issued document. States may choose the kinds of documentation individuals should present as evidence of this traceability. Individuals do not have to provide a complete listing of all the names that they may have previously used.' A marriage certificate is the typical link document, but the exact acceptable documents are determined by your state DMV.
SourceUpdate your U.S. passport to your new name: if it has been LESS than 1 year since BOTH your passport was issued and your name was legally changed, file Form DS-5504 by mail (no fee).
State Dept: submit Form DS-5504, your most recent U.S. passport, an original or certified document showing your name change within 1 year since your passport was issued (examples: marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order), and 1 passport photo. 'You will not have to submit any fees for this service. If you want expedited processing, you will have to pay a $60 fee.'
SourceIf it has been MORE than 1 year since your passport was issued or your name changed, renew by mail or apply in person to change the name (standard renewal fees apply).
State Dept: 'To renew by mail, you must provide a certified copy of your legal name change document. You can apply in person if you have a valid ID in your new name and you complete the marriage details section on page 2 of the Form DS-11.' This path is a standard renewal/application, not the free DS-5504 correction.
SourceBefore flying, make sure the ID you bring is either REAL ID-compliant or an acceptable alternative, and reflects the name you booked under.
TSA: REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. A REAL ID-compliant card is required to board commercial aircraft unless you use an acceptable alternative such as a U.S. passport, passport card, or a state-issued Enhanced Driver's License (EDL from WA, MI, MN, NY, VT). 'If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.'

Watch out for these
ORDER OF OPERATIONS: Your REAL ID must show your Full Legal Name and you must show 'name traceability' linking your source documents to your new name. Resolve your name across documents (SSA card, marriage certificate, then DMV/passport) so names are consistent — otherwise the DMV can refuse to issue your REAL ID. Source: DHS REAL ID FAQ.
PASSPORT <1-YEAR CORRECTION WINDOW: If it has been LESS than 1 year since BOTH your passport was issued AND your name legally changed, you can change the name for FREE using Form DS-5504 (you only pay $60 if you want expedition). Miss this window and you must do a standard (paid) renewal/application. Source: travel.state.gov.
TRAVEL / ID-NAME-MISMATCH RISK: 'If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.' REAL ID ENFORCEMENT IS LIVE: REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. To board a commercial flight you need a REAL ID-compliant card OR an acceptable alternative (U.S. passport, passport card, or qualifying Enhanced Driver's License). Source: TSA REAL ID FAQ.
EXPIRED-ID GRACE: TSA currently accepts expired IDs up to two years after expiration for the listed ID types — but do not rely on this if your name has also changed; the safest path is a current ID in your booked name. Source: TSA Acceptable Identification page.
CERTIFIED MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE REQUIRED: For a passport name change you must submit an ORIGINAL or CERTIFIED name-change document (e.g., marriage certificate) — not a photocopy. State DMVs likewise typically require an original/certified document for name traceability. Sources: travel.state.gov; DHS REAL ID FAQ.
NO ACCEPTABLE ID = $45 + DELAYS: If you reach the airport without an acceptable ID, you may use TSA's ConfirmID process and must pay a $45 fee before heading to the airport, and you still face possible delays or denial of entry to the checkpoint. Source: TSA Acceptable Identification page.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a REAL ID to fly after getting married?
- To board a commercial flight you need a REAL ID-compliant card or an acceptable alternative: a U.S. passport, a passport card, or a qualifying Enhanced Driver's License. If your identity can't be verified at the checkpoint, you won't be allowed through.
- What is 'name traceability' for a REAL ID?
- DHS wants a documented link between the name on your source document and the name you want on the card. After marriage, a certified marriage certificate is usually that link. Each state DMV decides exactly which documents it accepts, so confirm yours first.
- Do I update Social Security or my REAL ID first?
- Social Security first. Settling your name with SSA before the DMV keeps your records consistent. Skip that step and the DMV can refuse to issue your REAL ID on a name mismatch.
- What documents do I bring to the DMV for a REAL ID?
- Proof of your full legal name, your date of birth, your Social Security number, two proofs of where you live, proof of lawful status, and a name-traceability document if your names differ. States can add their own requirements, so check your state DMV first.
- What if I get to the airport without an acceptable ID?
- TSA may run its identity-verification process and charge a $45 fee, and you could still face delays or be turned away at the checkpoint. The safe move is a current ID in the exact name you booked under.
- Does this work the same after a divorce?
- Yes — the REAL ID process is the same. The one thing that changes is the document that traces your old name to your new one: a certified divorce decree instead of a marriage certificate.
